Olivia is a popular female name pronounced o-LIV-ee-ə or ə-LIV-ee-ə. It is a Latinate name, coined by Shakespeare for the rich heiress wooed by the duke in Twelfth Night (1599).^{citation needed} He might have derived the name from the olive plant (Latin: 'oliva') or used it as a feminine form of Oliver.¹
